GUIDELINES: RENUNCIATION OF CITIZENSHIP

PLEASE NOTE:

A citizen of Guyana who is of full age and capacity and is desirous of becoming a national of a foreign country can make in a prescribed manner a Declaration of Renunciation of Citizenship of Guyana. The Minister of Citizenship of Guyana shall cause the Declaration to be registered, and upon registration, that person shall cease to be a Citizen of Guyana.

A Declaration of Renunciation of Citizenship of Guyana by a person who is not a citizen of any other country shall be registered only if the Minister is satisfied that that person will, after the registration become a citizen or national of some other country. If that person does not become such a citizen or national within six (6) months from the date of registration, he shall be and be deemed to have remained a citizen of Guyana notwithstanding the registration.

All Original documents, except the Republic of Guyana Passport will be returned to the Applicant.

Certified English translations of all documents in foreign languages are required.

• Written letter stating the reason(s) for surrendering your Guyanese citizenship

• Original Republic of Guyana Passport

• Two (2) Passport-sized Photographs

• Original Certificate of Birth

• Original Certificate of Marriage, Divorce Decree, or Deed Poll (if there was a change of name)

• Acceptance Letter from the Country of Residence granting Citizenship

• Coloured Copy of the Applicant’s Passport of the Country granting Citizenship

• Coloured Copy of Identification Card of the Country of Residence (overseas)

• Proof of Address in the Country of Residence (overseas)

• Proof of Employment Overseas

• Overseas Driver’s License (if any)

FEES:

PAYMENT CAN ONLY BE MADE BY BANK TRANSFER. CASH IS NOT ACCEPTED.

PLEASE TRANSFER THE EXACT FEE INTO THE ACCOUNTS. THE EMBASSY WOULD NOT BE IN A POSITION TO REFUND ANY EXCESS PAYMENT.

PROCESS:

An Application for Renunciation of Citizenship can be submitted to the Embassy either in person or through the post.

The Embassy will send the Application to be processed by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, Ministry of the Presidency in Georgetown, Guyana via courier. This process can take approximately nine (9) months.

Once received, the Embassy will dispatch to the Applicant, the Certificate of Renunciation of Citizenship, via Registered Mail to the return address stated.

The Applicant is required to confirm receipt of the Certificate and other documents by signing and returning to the Embassy the “Receipt of Documents Slip” via email address (consular@embassyofguyana.be)
